Kayaking to learn about river ecosystems

    Guysborough Country, Nova Scotia

Starting Idea: Kayaking in Nova Scotia to learn more about protecting river ecosystems.

Please note: Because this a back-to-back PJ and QJ, it is imperative that the debrief is conducted immediately as it is critical the team is aware of any issues and challenges encountered and can plan accordingly to make the necessary modifications for the next days’ QJ.

Before the journey, we will research the local river environment and review kayaking protocols with our Supervisor. During the PJ, we will practice by kayaking one river segment in St. Mary’s River to ensure that we are comfortable and confident on the water. We will also spend some time exploring the environment and learning about ecosystem protections that are in place. During our trip, we will work together to set up our tents and cook a meal together. After, we will reflect on the journey with our AJ Supervisor and make any necessary changes to our plans for the QJ.

For our QJ, in the morning after our PJ we will continue down the river to kayak another river segment before camping overnight at another nearby campsite and doing another 2 river segments the next morning. We want to focus on identifying and observing various species in the area to learn more about river ecosystems. Between paddles, we will photograph what we see in the river ecosystem, write observations, and have discussions on what we find. We will share our findings with our Supervisor and engage in a discussion to further explore the importance of preserving and protecting these ecosystems. By the end of our journey, we will have a newfound appreciation for the beauty and preservation of river ecosystems in Nova Scotia.
