David McLean, 1938-2025

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Canada is incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of David G. McLean, O.B.C.

David was one of the early supporters of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Canada, and a Chair of the Charter for Business. He was a great champion of the Award and a supporter of youth across Canada” said Kevin Malone, Past Chair and Current Board Member, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Born in Edmonton, McLean graduated from University of Alberta law school. He founded McLean Group in 1972 as a real estate developer and oversaw numerous residential and commercial real estate projects in Vancouver and throughout North America. Under his leadership, McLean Group expanded to include companies in not only film and television, but also telecommunications and helicopter aviation. The McLean McCuaig Foundation has made many significant contributions to education and healthcare institutions in British Columbia, Alberta, and other parts of Canada.

During his career, McLean chaired or served on several other corporate boards including Chair of the Board of CN Rail from 1994 to 2014, DeHavilland Aircraft of Canada, and Nu West Development Corporation. His roles also included chairing the Vancouver Board of Trade, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the UBC Board of Governors, the Board of the Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospital Foundation, and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Canada, Charter for Business.

Gregory Belton CM, CVO, former National President and International Award Foundation Chair stated, “Through David, CN was one of the first critical supporters of the Charter for Business, leading to many more important Canadian Corporate partners. It enabled us to greatly expand our reach into underserved youth communities across Canada. It was an important milestone in the history of the Award in Canada.”

Our thoughts are with Brenda (wife), family, and friends at this time.
