Seeking Adventure, Marcus’ Award Story

“I always seek adventure and challenges, and I like trying new things that can inspire me. I am so grateful for the opportunity the Award has provided me. 

 Skill – Swimming  

Being a provincial athlete in swimming opened my interest to try other sports and adventures such as open water swimming and other water sports. My parents, as SCUBA divers, and their passion and love for the marine world has given me first-hand water experience. I can still remember the many times to travel to different countries without skipping to visit the beach or boat out the ocean or lake. I used these experiences to help me become a competitive swimmer and create new opportunities such as paddle boarding and open water swimming.

Adventurous Journey  

When I started my Adventure Journey with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, I knew that this was more than just a program but a great path to work towards my goal in a structured way. The Adventurous Journey that I chose for this program helped me apply the outdoor skills I learned from school and enhance them during our camping trip with the guidance of my mentors. Although the paddle boarding adventure is very new to me, I took that challenge to learn about the safe and enjoyable way to paddleboard in an open sea. The amount of time and distance I covered paddle boarding both in the open water and lakes had unconsciously enhanced my physical abilities as well. I will take the experience I gained from this program to join paddle boarding clubs and marine conservation groups this coming summer.
