My mom’s friend told me about the Award and that her children (who were also Venturers) completed their Bronze level. When I got home, I instantly started searching up the Award and its requirements. A couple of weeks later, I found myself signing up for the Award. I asked my Scout Leader, who I’ve known for a long time if he would be willing to act as my Award Leader and he accepted. When I started my Award journey, I was the only Scout in our group working towards this incredible achievement. Hopefully, in the future, many others will follow our lead!

Scouts plus the Award, equals your path to success!

Research shows that growth comes not from the activity itself but from how it’s achieved. The Award’s 7 Elements of the Canada Way focus on personal goals, guided mentorship, and reflection—aligning perfectly with Scouting’s Educational Objectives and Top Section Awards.

By integrating the Award with your Scouting activities, you enhance what you’re already doing with meaningful steps that deepen learning and outcomes for youth. Learn more about the 7 Elements here.

Aligning Scouting Sections with the Award

Scouting and the Award go hand in hand, with many Scouting activities aligning closely to the Award’s four sections: Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, Skills, and Adventurous Journey. Each Award level—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—builds on your achievements, offering a structured pathway to earn recognition for your efforts in both programs. Below, you'll find examples of how Scouting requirements connect to the Award sections, making it easy to see how your hard work can count toward both:

  • Scouting Focus: Complete 18 (Chief Scout’s Award), 24 (King’s Venturer Award), or 32 (Canadian Rover Scout Award) Outdoor Adventure Skill stages in any combination.
  • Award Connection: In the Award, the Adventurous Journey section encourages young people discover a spirit of adventure and discovery while planning and undertaking a journey with a peer group. Use your outdoor skills for your Adventurous Journey section in the Award to develop and demonstrate your Scouts outdoor skills.
  • Idea Example: Whether it’s planning a trek, canoeing a river, or mastering backwoods camping, your journey in Scouting satisfies key elements of both awards. Explore how your Scouting achievements can bring you closer to earning the Award- the Scouts Activity Zone provides the flexibility and recognition to ensure your hard work counts every step of the way!
  • Scouting Focus: Complete 30 (Chief Scout’s Award), 60 (King’s Venturer Award), or 80 hours (Canadian Rover Scout Award) of community service.
  • Award Connection: In the Award, the Voluntary Service section includes participants volunteering in their communities, making a positive contribution to society and demonstrating social responsibility. Log your service hours in Scouts for the Voluntary Service section of the Award.
  • Idea Example: From leading a cleanup project to organizing a food drive, your Scouting service contributes directly to both awards. Explore how your Scouting achievements can bring you closer to earning the Award- the Scouts Activity Zone provides the flexibility and recognition to ensure your hard work counts every step of the way!
  • Scouting Focus: Complete a Meaningful Service Project as part of the Chief Scout’s Award, King’s Venturer Award, or Canadian Rover Scout Award, ensuring full participation and shared effort.
  • Award Connection: At the Gold level, the Award’s Gold Project encourages participants to broaden their experience through a purposeful project in an unfamiliar environment. If the example from UK Scouting and UK DofE is anything to go by, this is held extremely high regard by employers, universities and employers. For participants not yet at the Gold level, your Meaningful Service Project can still count toward other sections of the Award. For example, use a leadership role within your project (e.g., coordinating logistics or mentoring younger Scouts) to fulfill the Skill section, showcasing growth in planning and organizational abilities. Or, if your project involves physical labor, such as building a trail or organizing a charity run, log your hours under the Physical Recreation section.
  • Idea Example:
  • Gold Project alignment: Organize a conservation camp, lead a youth program, or create a community-building initiative.
  • Alternative ideas: While the Gold Project is only required at the Gold level, every Meaningful Service Project offers opportunities to align with your Award journey. For instance, managing a tree-planting event could count as Skill (planning and leadership) or Physical Recreation (strength and endurance). The flexibility ensures you maximize recognition for your efforts.
